How to Care for your Lashes in the Winter

Updated: Aug 28, 2023

Winter is the season of sweaters, snowmen, hot chocolate, and fireplaces. It is a wonderful time of the year except for our hair, skin, and eyelashes. Because of the colder temperatures and lower levels of humidity it leads to dry skin and hair, which also affects the growth cycle of eyelashes. In winter, hair, including eyelashes, are more brittle and grow slower. As a result, they may shed prematurely. So it’s important to put a little added care into your lashes and yourself in the winter months.

Here are some tips that will help you enjoy beautiful eyelashes in the winter months.

Moisturize and Clean your Lashes

As it’s well known in the winter the dry, cold weather causes humidity in the air to drop significantly. As a result, our skin gets drier and hair becomes brittle and vulnerable. Our lashes are exposed to temperature changes as well. We basically can’t just cover them with anything unlike our other body parts. So moisturizing eyelashes is critical in order to keep them in good health.

You may know that castor or linseed oil makes wonders with natural lashes as it promotes growth. For the few of you who use the oil resistant glue (which contains castor oil) you are already receiving great moisturizing benefits.

For the majority of lash clients, oil is one of the biggest enemies, as they can make the bonds loose and cause your extensions to pop off. To prevent that, avoid using moisturizers that contain oils, glycerin, and wax. If you use such a moisturizer for your face, make sure that it doesn’t get near your eyes.

You can shop around for special serums that can be applied to lashes with extensions. They usually contain plant or herbal extracts and help moisturize lashes and promote growth. Eyenvy is one I highly recommend.

The chilly winter winds and snow can cause damage to your dainty lash extensions. A good lash cleaner is a must to keep your lashes healthy daily. It helps the skin and lashes to get rid of any debris, oil and makeup away that may have deposited during the day.

Enjoy Safe Steaming

In the cold season, an excellent way to keep your entire body healthy and strong is enjoying a sauna or a hot tub. They revive your body and mind, make you feel healthier and refresh your eyelashes.

It is ok to use saunas, steam rooms, and take a hot tub with eyelash extensions as long as you follow two simple rules:

-Do NOT do this in the first 24 hrs of having lash extensions applied. (The lash adhesive is still curing to create a strong bond)

-Never touch and rub your eyes while using them!

The hot air & steam softens the adhesive bonds and if you rub your eyes at that moment, you may cause your lash extensions to fall. Once your eyelashes cool again, everything goes back to normal.

Once you have finished and returned home, your extensions will need some extra care. There may be germs, pollutants, and debris from hot tubs and saunas that may affect your lash extensions. So proper cleaning is essential to maintain your lashes for a longer duration.

In other words, enjoy a nice steaming experience but remember not to touch your eyes. Your eyelashes won’t suffer any negative side effects of the steam.

Go for Regular Fills

It is necessary to visit your lash artist regularly for fills in order to keep your eyelash extensions in supreme form all year long. Generally we lose between 2 to 5 lashes a day naturally. As mentioned earlier, the climatic conditions compel you to visit your lash artist every 2-3 weeks.

During your appointment, the artist not only removes overgrown, twisted extensions and replaces new ones, but also assesses the health of the natural lashes to let you know if there is any problem.

In case of any doubts or concerns about premature lash fall, your artist would be the best person to consult and find out if there is any particular reason for that.

Get a Fresh Set of Eyelash Extensions

Winter is also a good time to try something different. Since the mood and climate have changed, you can experiment with a different lash set from the one that you had for summer. It will change your look.

If you have been wearing very long or thick eyelash extensions throughout the summer, maybe it is time to change them with a lighter set for the winter. In addition to the brand-new look, you will also give your natural lashes a chance to revive and keep that fabulous look throughout the whole year.

There is also the option, to give your lashes a few weeks pause and wear no extensions, which we know is quite hard for lash-addicts. Your lash artist will tell you if this step is necessary in case you have heavy seasonal shedding, for example, and that is the best move for your lashes.

Maintain a Healthy Diet with Enough Vitamin Intake

Health is Wealth! A healthy diet will positively affect your skin, hair, and eyelashes. You need to take a lot of vitamins and minerals either through your food or as supplements. One of the important minerals is silica, an essential beauty mineral that strengthens teeth and bones and also promotes hair, and nail growth. Vitamins B, C, D, and E should also be part of your diet. Vitamin C has antioxidant properties that protect the skin and hair from damage and harmful bacteria.

It is good to consult your doctor or a nutritionist about how to include them in your diet and which is the appropriate dosage for you.

If your diet accommodates a decent balance of vitamins and minerals, that's fabulous! If that is not the case, adding supplements to your winter routine will keep you and your lashes healthy this winter.

These simple tips can help you have healthier hair, skin, and lashes in the cold season and allow you to enjoy your favorite eyelash extensions in winter too.
